Do you know what topics your ideal clients are searching for?
Your gut reaction might be yes. Because, of course, you know what they need to know to hire you.
But that doesn’t mean they do.
Your blog needs to educate your audience so they can decide whether or not to work with you.
When you’re looking for your next blog topic, take your photographer hat off and really think about what they’re searching for, not what you want them to be searching for.
So what should you blog about? How do you decide if a topic is relevant to your ideal client? And how do you make sure couples actually find your blog in the first place?
Let’s get into it.
*This blog is specifically for wedding photographers, but if you have a different niche, you can still follow this process!

Every blog you write needs 2 things: a specific goal (for you) and a clear CTA (for your reader).
Otherwise, you’re just writing for funzies—and that doesn’t pay the bills. So let’s make sure your blogs have a purpose.
Your goal is whatever outcome you want from couples reading your blog.
Specific goals include:
Your goal will impact the way you approach your topic.
Your CTA is the ONE action you want couples to take after they’re finished reading.
Clear CTAs include:
Let’s say you’re writing a blog post about different poses you can do with veils.
Your goal might be to build trust (because you want potential couples to know you’ve dealt with this situation before and you know what you’re doing) and your CTA could be to download your free posing guide.
Here are more examples from my clients.
Photographer’s Goal: To attract couples who want to get married at Disney
CTA: “Our expert team of photographers and videographers is ready to bring your fairytale vision to life. Contact us today and let us help you plan a Disney wedding with photos and film that will last a lifetime.”
Photographer’s Goal: To be discovered by couples getting married in Pensacola
CTA: “We can only hope these venues have provided you with some excellent options for your Pensacola beach wedding. If you are searching for videography and photography services to make your day even more special, feel free to get in touch with us!”
Photographer’s Goal: To gain couples’ trust and present themself as a reliable resource
CTA: “Looking for other planning resources? Check out my blog for more information like this. Here are a few links to get you started!”
Photographer’s Goal: To attract couples considering an elopement
CTA: “Whatever vision you have for your special day, I would be honored to capture those memories. Check out my pricing to learn more about my philosophy, process, and packages. If you’re ready to book now, fill out an inquiry form to get started!”
Sandrien B. Photography | 8 Reasons You Should Print Your Images
Photographer’s Goal: to explain the importance of printing photos (the heart of this photographer’s philosophy and something they talk about often)
CTA: “I firmly believe that the best way to enjoy your professional photographs is to print them. Keep your most precious memories close and allow yourself to be reminded of your favorite moments daily.
Have you ordered prints or products from me? Take a picture and tag me on Instagram. I’d love to see how you’ve captured your favorite moments!”
Sandrien B. Photography | How to Choose the Best Outfits for Your Photo Shoot
Photographer’s Goal: to solve a problem (“What do I wear for my photo session?”)
CTA: “Don’t forget to reach out to your photographer if you have any questions! It is part of my job to ensure you feel as confident as possible leading up to your session. I am always available to look over outfits and give suggestions!”
You also have to keep in mind where couples are in their planning process when they’re searching for your blog topic. We can figure this out using search intent (why couples are searching in the first place).

Informational – couples are looking to learn more about a topic, or have a problem they want to solve (Education)
Commercial – couples are researching products and services to help with purchase decisions (Discovery, Build Trust)
Navigational – couples are searching for a specific website or page (Nurture Leads)
Transactional – couples are looking to complete a specific action, usually a purchase (Convert)
For most wedding photography blog topics, you’ll wanna stay within the informational and commercial areas.
That’s because your blog is not the place couples will go when they search your business name, or “wedding photographer near me.” Those are navigational and transactional search intents (respectively), and we want couples to be taken to your main website pages for these searches.
Here are some broad formatting categories of blogs for wedding photographers:
If we take a topic like “engagement session prep” and format it into these categories, it could look like this:
Each of these blogs could have completely different information, making it super easy to create related blog posts you can link together or list under a specific category. If you write a blog that gets a ton of traffic, write more blogs around the same topic!
It really doesn’t matter how you choose to format your blog, as long as the information you share is clear and actionable.

You should never start with SEO—the primary goal of your blog should be to educate, not get a bunch of clicks.
Always research your topic first, then research keywords that fit the topic.
